With no educational training, I was expected to teach English to Korean middle school students without a book. That isn’t easy to do, and I’ve repressed my horrible memories of the initial results. However, during my three years in Korea I (thankfully) got better. I fell into a formula for creating ESL lesson plans that actually worked well for my students.
